Understanding Dutch Elm Disease:

What Homeowners Need to Know

October 2, 2026

Dutch Elm Disease (DED) is one of the most devastating threats to elm trees in North America. Even healthy trees can fall victim to this aggressive fungal disease, making it a serious concern for any homeowner with elm trees on their property.

What Is Dutch Elm Disease?

Dutch Elm Disease is caused by a fungus that enters the tree’s water transport system, which carries life-giving water, food and nutrients from the roots to the leaves. When the fungus moves in, the tree tries to protect itself by blocking off those pathways.

Unfortunately, that means water can’t reach the top of the tree, and pretty soon, you’ll notice wilting branches. If nothing is done, the tree will die. That’s why DED is known as the most costly shade-tree disease; it sticks around as long as elms are nearby.

How Does It Spread?

The disease primarily spreads through elm bark beetles. Female beetles lay eggs under the bark of dead or dying elm trees. If these trees are infected, newly hatched beetles emerge carrying the fungus and spread it to healthy trees as they feed on young branches. Dutch Elm Disease can also spread through root grafts, which occur when the roots of nearby elm trees grow together, allowing the fungus to move quickly from tree to tree.

Recognizing the Symptoms

Wilting or "flagging" of an elm's branches

If you’re worried about your trees, here’s what to look for. Symptoms usually pop up about a month after infection:

  • Wilting or “flagging” of one or more branches, starting at the tips
  • Leaves turning from dull green to yellow, curling, and becoming dry and brittle
  • Canopy die-back starting from the top of the tree

A Crucial Take-Home Message: Don’t Wait!

It’s important to know: Once an elm tree shows symptoms of Dutch Elm Disease, it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to save it. That’s why waiting until you see signs of trouble isn’t a good plan. If you have an elm that’s valuable to you, the best way to protect it is to treat it preventively, before infection ever sets in. Preventive treatments are the most reliable way to keep DED from taking hold. Investing in proactive care today can help you avoid heartbreak (and expensive removals) later.
