Prevent Winter Injury With Anti-Transpirants
Winter injuries, sometimes called sunscald or winter burn, happen most commonly to conifers (evergreen/needle) trees. This damage occurs when the pores of the needles open and water is released from the foliage on sunny days in the winter. The moisture cannot be replaced since the tree is dormant. The drying effects of this can kill needles, branches and entire plants. Anti-transpirant treatments block moisture loss.
- Winter injury is when green tissues get damaged, but the woody parts of the plant are alive and can grow new leaves or needles.
- Winter kill is when woody stem tissues are damaged, or killed, and will never be able to recover.
Anti-transpirants will not fix needles or branches/trunks that are damaged or already dead, but can prevent more damage from happening. If you have susceptible trees and shrubs it is best to treat them with anti-transpirants early.
Rainbow Treecare can apply these environmentally friendly treatments to any size tree throughout the fall and winter months.
