Harmful Insects
Spider Mites
Spider mites cause problems on almost all plants grown in Minnesota. A wide variety of trees, shrubs, flowers, vegetables, and turfgrasses may suffer injury during periodic spider mite outbreaks. Spider mites suck out plant juices with their piercing-sucking mouthparts. The damaged area will have lighter green or yellow speckles where the chlorophyll has been sucked out of the leaf. In heavy infestations, entire plants may become discolored. Mite damage may be associated with premature leaf or needle drop, especially during hot, dry periods.
